Topo Maps use what is called a Military Grid to determine exact location. When you look at a topographic map, you will notice grids of numbered blue lines. We can use these lines to locate any place on a topographic map.
- the numbers of the vertical lines increase as you go from West to East. This is why they are calledeasting numbers.

- the numbers of the horizontal lines increase as you go from South to North. This is why they are called northing numbers.

- you can approximate a location using 4 digits (easting and northing)

- using 4 digits, Fred’s Bridge would be 2238.

- if we wanted to be more specific, the exact location of Fred’s Bridge would be 227387.

- by combining three digits from the easting and the three digits from the northing, we are able to identify a specific location on the map.
